The condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury is safety.

Security is the state of being free from danger or threat.

Source: Oxford Dictionary.

The basic idea of both is protecting assets from hazards/threats creating safe/secure conditions. The condition safety is about being protected, while the condition security is about being free from danger. The differences between being protected and being free from danger or threat are not easily seen.

The condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury is safety. Security is the state of being free from danger or threat. ... 'Security', on the other hand, simply means a state of being free from harm or injury.

What is safety and security?
The term “Safety” is applied to glazing used to reduce the risk of accident by impact, fracture, shattering, or in a fire. the term “Security” is applied to glazing, which in addition to “Safety”, is able to withstand a variety of deliberate attacks such as manual, ballistic or blast resistant.

Is safety and security the same?
In many languages, there is only one word for safety and security. ... According to Merriam-Webster, the primary definition of safety is "the condition of being free from harm or risk," which is essentially the same as the primary definition of security, which is "the quality or state of being free from danger."

Hi,

***safety: The state of being safe; exemption from hurt or injury; freedom from danger. safety chain, a chain providing additional security

***security: The condition of being protected from or not exposed to danger; safety. (SOURCE:- Safety and Security)

Think of security as if it were the umbrella in a storm protecting you from the rain. Your safety lies in the importance of staying warm and dry. Security is the safeguard that ensures our safety remains constant. If the variables risking our safety can be predicted, they can be prevented. Inside our homes, thermostats maintain cozy room temperatures. Locks secure doors. The outside world is not so easily controlled. Weather forecasts may warn us of rain, but safety still requires our participation: Awareness + Preparation = Safety

Safety

Every process/situation has its inherent dangers/chances of being hurt. Avoiding these inherent dangers by following manuals, recommendations, standard operating procedures etc. can be termed safety. For example, imagine you are going to drive your car, your parent might advise you to drive safe, what they mean is you should drive sober, not speed and be careful etc. They want you to avoid inherent dangers involved in driving ie accident. Same goes for operating heavy machinery safely, play soccer safely and so on. We don't use security here but safety.

Security

Now, apart from inherent dangers involved in a situation, there might be risks from external factors. Like if you are driving a car through a war torn region, chances are you might be blown up or shot at. These danger are not inherent in driving but are external factors. Avoiding these dangers is what can be termed as security. We have security forces, not safety forces, simply because they protect from external factors, not from inherent risks. Similarly, when you secure your doors at night, you want to protect yourself from external factors like Robert, animals etc.

I guess I have made it clear enough. Although this understanding is bases on my common sense, not on any standard definition but I think it makes sense. Still corrections are welcome.

Security is the protection against the intentional damage, but, safety is the protection against the accidental damage.

How about

Safety is the mechanisms put in place to keep you and the people around you free from harm.

Security it the belief those mechanisms are working.
