WorldStage Newsonline-- A student of Federal Government College, Warri, Delta State, Isioma Nelson Ifeanyichukwu, has emerged winner of the 16th edition of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) National Quiz Completion.   

The competition which began from the grass root stage at 774 local government areas of the county witnessed 18 students from six geopolitical zones contestingd at the grade final on Tuesday at the NNPC corporate headquarters in Abuja.

The second position went to Benjamin Chisom Chinueze, of Dority International, Secondary School Aba, Abia State, while the third position was Akingbulugbe Oluwatobilob, of Hallmark Secondary School Ondo, Ondo State.

The final of the quiz witnessed an array of brilliant minds in the field of mathematics, chemistry and NNPC general k knowledge.

In his opening remark, Group Managing Director, NNPC, Dr. Malikanti Baru, said the corporation will be providing a one-off educational grant of N100, 000 each for all state winners to help defray the costs of their tertiary education.

According to him, the overall winner of the competition will get a scholarship award of N300, 000 grants per session throughout the duration of tertiary education, while 2nd and 3rd will receive a scholarship award of N250, 000 and N200, 000 respectively per session for the duration of their tertiary education.

Baru added that the NNPC decided to make promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education a key element of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, saying, “interestingly, it is a reason why we established the NNPC National Quiz Competition with its focus on these branches of knowledge.

“The 2017 edition is the sixteenth in the competitions history. The first edition in 2000 was limited to the Niger Delta. However, in recognition of the strategic importance of the Quiz to our CSR goals, the competition was taken nationwide in 2001.

 “We are proud to say that even areas of the North –East that have been affected by the insurgency are not left out of the competition.”

Baru stated that in ensuring that best standards were maintained for the competition, NNPC had a partnership with West Africa Examination Council (WAEC); the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) as well as the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN).

Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikw, stated that it was a tough competition to go through 774 local governments in the 36 states and come out with bright individuals.

He further encouraged the students to congratulate themselves saying it was a call to action.

“When I was young, one of the things that we enjoy was competition for layers, representing Nigeria and University of Nsuka. At this time it wasn’t about the money, it was the glory of the institution.”

Advising the students, Kachikwu said, “apart from getting money for your education, it also brings you to a limelight that opens doors and corridors.”

Speaker of House of Representative Honourable Yakubu Dogara, who was represented by Honourable Joseph Akinlaja Chairman House of Representative Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), commended the corporation for making the educational competition as key to its corporate social responsibility this are leaders of tomorrow seating down here.

 “By the Grace of God, we do not expect less from a corporation that is managed by two engineers that came out in their time with first class both home and abroad and these are Ibe Kachikwu and Malikanti Baru.

Dogara, however, congratulated the corporation for the continuity of the competition since the past 17 years that had produced first class engineers.

“In this country we have sure success in graduate first class in humanity but in technology we need a lot to do,” he said.

Dogara emphasised the importance of engineering graduate in the country, saying, “it is easy for an engineer to become an administrator, but it is not possible for someone in humanity to do the work of an engineer. So these engineering base students are very important to the life and development of our country.”

He charged the students to become good ambassadors of their various institutions and Nigeria at large.

Winner of the competition, Ifeanyichukwu said, “ it was difficult but I narrowly scale to the finals, the Quiz master told me something that if you work harder I believe you can take glory to the nation and I held up and prepare for the nationals.

“I want to thank NNPC, I promise that the scholarship they are giving to me will be used to the best of my ability to the best I can be and they should continue with their effort in improving youths in Nigeria.” 

Special Guest of Honour at the grand finale was the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, represented by Hon Joseph Akinlaja, House Chairman of Petroleum Resources (Downstream).

Other top dignitaries were Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, Edo state Governor Godwin Obaseki, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu and top executives at the NNPC.
